Saint Louis University Libraries Digital Collections

About this collection

The Saint Louis University Archives contains over 250,000 images, dating from the early nineteenth century to the present. The library has digitized thousands of photographs and is compiling them into a searchable digital collection.

This collection includes not only photographs, but pamphlets, drawings, newspapers, and other archival materials.  It covers a very wide range of topics, but with special focus on the Jesuits, SLU student life, aviation, Parks College, soccer, and other sports.

Father Luke Photographs: Boleslaus T. Lukaszewski S.J. (1914-1970), better known as "Father Luke", was a professor of Philosophy at SLU for over 20 years. From September 1951 until his death in 1970, Father Luke was also the unofficial university photographer.  During those years, he took an estimated 28,000 photos on over 1,600 rolls of film, making an invaluable record of life at SLU in the 1950s and 1960s.  Thousands of these photos, arranged chonologically by roll, have been digitized from the original negatives, and more are continually being added to the collection.  A short biography of Father Luke is also available in our digital collections.

Public Relations Folders: For many years, the SLU Public Relations department maintained a collection of photo files for their reference. This collection, which eventually grew to over 15,000 images sorted into folders by topic, was later donated to the SLU Archives. These folders have now been scanned, and a selection of them are now available here. There are images from the late 1800s until around 2000, but the bulk are from the late 1950s to the late 1980s.  The images are grouped by folder, according to the original organization of the files.  Of special interest are the folders on SLU commencement ceremonies (1959-1981, plus 1988 and 1989), and on the annual Founders Week celebrations (1955-1988).

Some of the main topics in this collection include:

Rita G. Adams Photographic Collection:  Rita Adams, a SLU graduate and former History department staff member, compiled over 1,200 images over the course of her research on Saint Louis University and the St. Louis area.  Many of these went into her 1968 book, Saint Louis University: 150 Years, which is available in our digital collections.  Adams' collection of historic photos is an excellent resource on the history of SLU in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it now is being added to this collection. It has been sorted according to the same categories she used.  The first series is alphabetical, the rest are in chronological order:

  1. Individuals
  2. Jesuit Groups
  3. Old St. Louis
  4. SLU Athletics
  5. Student Activities
  6. Other Colleges, Churches, & Medical Buildings
  7. Saint Louis University
  8. Miscellaneous
  9. Unidentified
  10. Miscellanaeous Added Photos

The Archives Image Collection is an ongoing project. Additional images are continually being digitized and added to the collection, so please check back often for updates.
